  1. Kontiki

From the recording Kontiki

Classical guitar, MIDI guitar, cello, vocals, ocean waves.
This piece was inspired by the 1950 book by Thor Heyerdahl, the famed Norwegian explorer. Heyerdahl and his gang build a raft and floated across the Pacific Ocean from Peru to Polynesia in a 3 month voyage proving that it would have been physically possible for ancient people from Peru to have crossed the Pacific. Heyerdahl proposed that the Polynesians might have been descendants of an ancient race of Peruvians who survived the journey to Polynesia. The book Kon-Tiki and the courage of Heyerdahl to float across the entire pacific on a raft captured the imagination and awe of a generation. Modern day DNA researchers had initially rejected Heyerdahl's theory. However, in the last 5 years there has been a resurgence in the theory's popularity (see the links section for more on this!)
i created the music for Kontiki so that at the midpoint there is a dramatic change in the music from ancient to modern style. This corresponds to a dream that something magical happens to the line of floating rafts… The vastness of the Pacific ocean traversed by a raft floating for over 100 days in Kontiki somehow reminds one of the vastness of the lost ocean on Mars.
